The book's dual narrative centers around Sidney "Sid" Griffiths, a journeyman blues bassist. Griffiths' friend and bandmate, Hieronymus "Hiero" Falk, is caught on the wrong side of 1939 Nazi ideology, and is essentially lost to history.
